There's not much you can say about a TT so I'll make it quick. Spent the morning on the lawn watching everyone hustle to their starts ( the race started at 8:30 am and I had a 1:01:00 PM start time) cleaning up the bike, and generally stressing in general. After confusing both the SRAM mechanics with the team's new Easton EC90 wheelset I realized that my SRAM cassette wouldn't fit it and I had to rely on my worn out Shimano cassettes for the duration of the weekend. Nothing I couldn't handle - went with the 12-23 for the mostly uphill TT.<br /><br />Started hard, too hard. The TT climbs immediately for about 3 miles. I quickly put myself in position to catch the guy in front of me but he held on strong for most of the race. All of my points that I had scouted in the recon ride were a total blur. When I reached the top of the hill I was almost confused as to how I'd gotten there. I grinded down the descent, slower than I had hoped in spots, holding between 28-32 mph. Finally on the last dip I caught my 30 second man but boy did I pay for that. With names like Jiminy <span style="font-weight:bold;">Peak</span> and Blue <span style="font-weight:bold;">Hills </span>Classic how can a six-foot-two 154 pounder resist?<br /><br />Jiminy Peak was a 3 lap, 90 km race. The organizers would have you believe that the 4% grade followed by 7% to the finish was perhaps the most brutal thing west of Alp D'huez. The only thing remotely exciting about this race was the potential for a massive downpour and the near zero visibility fog we drove through on the way out. The race rolled out into a solid 10 miles of downhill rollers before climbing back up and going down again. Nick flats in the first lap. RMM flats sometime after. Craig falls off the back. So far it was looking to be a real bang up day for the CB 4 squad.<br /><br />That leaves, well, me, alone and confused in a world of non stop failed downhill attacks. Why must every cat 4 assume that he needs to attack when he feels good? <br /><br />Read: On the downhill, when, well, everyone feels good.<br /><br />But, for fairness sake, I decided I'd jump in on one just to see what all the rage was about. It was decidedly pointless, but at least I hit the season's top race speed at a hair under 53 mph. <br /><br />By the end I was bored, more sore than I should've been, and couldn't hold my own in the uphill field sprint. Sometimes riding gets in the way of blogging about riding - that or modeling world oil demand for the government of Abu Dhabi. Needless to say, last weekend marked my first experience with New England's own hell of the north - Battenkill Roubaix.<br /><br />I opted to sleep at home and drive up with Nick the morning off. Even at 7:00 am as we rolled out of Cambridge the temperature was noticeably mild. It made for an enjoyable drive, but would turn out to be a key factor in the days race.<br /><br />By the time we were kitted up and warmed up the temperature was well above 75. With no leaves on the northern New York trees, there was little shade to be found. RMM, Savona, Nick, and I gathered for a warm up ride to discuss the day's strategy. I was feeling strong and cocky, so it was decided I was going to be the early man; any break that went off the front I would cover.<br /><br />The race got off and tension was high. From the start my mouth was dry and I was incredibly parched. There's so much hype surrounding Battenkill - for months stories of 18% dirt hills were abound. When we hit the first hill, I have to say, I was disappointed. Already I was getting boxed out by guys moving backwards in the pack. We got past the first hill with the pack together, and looped back through Salem. Very quickly I realized that we had yet to tackle the first real hill. When we hit it, all hell broke lose. <br /><br />First off, these dirt roads had been recently graded leaving behind an inch or two of loose dirt combined with golf ball sized rocks. The first hill kicked up above 15%. For the first time I was riding 39x27 and I was struggling. Staying in the saddle meant a trip down lactic acid lane, standing meant a total loss of traction as your back wheel slid washed out. The pack was reeling, weaving back and forth, searching for a clean line. I was making progress, walking that thin line of sustainable power and death march, when the guy in front of me went down. I pulled hard to the right, throwing my back wheel around in a skid that would've made my 7 year old self incredibly proud. I thought I was done. I scrambled through the sand the best I could, my head pounding, the dust suffocating me, but somehow I made it over. The pack had splintered, and left a breakaway of about 8 guys up ahead. I quickly fell into a chase group and repelled into the pain cave. The leaders had about 10 seconds on us and were working together realy well. That was where I needed to be. On a short 150 foot rise I put it in the big ring and made my move, peeling away from the chase. My solo break took me into the covered bridge, leaving me blind for 2 seconds. As I came out the pack was there, and I was on, and I was bloody tired.<br /><br />For the next hour or so I worked in the most incredible cat 4 breakaway ever. Perfect pulls, incredible cooperation, holding a pace of about 24 mph. A few stragglers joined on and the pack grew to about 15 guys. The only trouble now was the heat. I had started with three water bottles, and I was quickly draining them. Luckily in the first feed zone there was a neutral that was I was able to grab. As I sat up to take a swig and pass it on to another guy a rider in the front of the pack dropped a water bottle, which of course I hit, with one hand on the bar, spilling water all over myself and the guy next to me, but luckily staying upright. <br /><br />We cruised on. Hitting hills, nailing descents. About 1:55 into the race something went wrong. Even now, a week later, I couldn't tell you, but suddenly I was off the back. And that was it. I was in no man's land. The breakaway ahead, and some semblance of the peloton behind me. This climbing road race had become a time trial. It had officially become epic. I settled into the drops, and found a gear I could stay on top of, and I went. The sun beat down, the pavement flew by, and I ground it out. Everytime I felt good with a gear I'd tell myself, "this is easy, you can move down" So I'd shift down. "Ok, this is too much, 10 strokes and go back down." This continued, through the false dirt flat, through the final climbs, for 55 minutes of solo hell I worked to hold off anyone who was behind me. It was incredible. I came across stragglers from the masters race, and picked them off one at a time. Oh yes, I'm a bike racer again. Time for the morning routine, stuffing as many carbohydrates as my half awake stomach can take, and double checking the weather report for the day. Yep, still cold.<br /><br />I met RMM and Nick at the shop for a 6:15 departure to the Turtle Pond Circuit Race. At 46 miles the race marks my first official road race. My legs ache a bit, protesting the early hour, but they mean well. I opt for the wool, the R2, the short sleeve, and finally long sleeve jersey. Down below its embrocation and leg warmers. A once over reveals its definitely a small ring climb, but I'm finding no trouble keeping myself in control in the saddle. Four laps, five times over the hill, with the finish at the top of the hill.<br /><br />The race rolls off and there's an immediate attack off the front. We had already decided to let any early break go, as there was a solid 2 miles of downhill after the climb, and it wasn't worth killing it early on to pull in a failed break. The first lap is uneventful - the three sharp right hand corners come as big surprises and cause little sprints but the pack stays together. I spent most of the lap sitting about 35 back from the front of the group. As we come through to climb the hill for the second time I settle into a reasonable rhythm in the saddle, and quickly find myself up in the top 10 guys in the peleton. At this point the break has about 30 seconds on the field and I'm getting concerned. The group is taking the downhills a little too easy and the break is gaining more time on the descents and rollers than anything else. I move to the front and with the help of RMM try to get a chase group formed. Oh wait, cat 4 racing, no one knows how to work together. By the last half of the final lap I'm feeling antsy, so I quickly move from midpack up the yellow line and take a jump off the front, in hopes of picking up the pace and stringing out the group. A few guys follow and our pace picks up - finally. Now RMM and I are maneuvering within the counter attacks, each of us covering anything off the front. We manage to drop 30 seconds off of the lead group in a few miles. Coming to the turn before the final climb I'm sitting at the head of the pack. I settle into my rhythm and get prepped for the climb. About halfway through a group makes a jump and comes around my left hand side. I drop a few gears and stand to sprint after them. I'm immediately in a world of pain. No acceleration at all. I actually start to fall back. I settle back into the saddle and spend about 15 seconds recovering from my effort. Another group gets past me and I make it to the line somewhere in the top 25 (I haven't seen the results yet). <br /><br />Still, it was a solid performance. I'm still in my base miles period (I do have to race well into December remember) and this was not a priority race. First long road race of the season at 46 miles. I got a little bit under rested this past week but I should be ready to at least be a contender tomorrow - hopefully the uphill finish will work to my advantage. Mainly I just want a longer race to get me prepped for <a href="http://www.battenkillroubaix.com/">Battenkill</a> which is next week. Its now officially the largest one day race in America - and features 5 unpaved sections with hills in excess of 15%. That one is gonna hurt. Despite being a Monday night there was a decent turnout, and of course DJ Mayhem spinning tunes. Last time my qualifying run was well out of the top 8, but this time I was able to clock a roughly 45 second time that stood in the third for most of the night. That was until Nick knocked me into 4th with his beer chugging no hands effort. Saturday, Dan Watts and I got out for a seemingly gorgeous ride. That was until Dan found himself flatting twice, exhausting our rather limited supply of tubes, patches and Co2 cartridges, and effectively stranding us by Walden Pond. Thankfully we had one cell phone, with limited battery of course, and two women to call. Girlfriends: 1 Wifes: 0.<br /><br />Sunday morning I rocked Wells Ave for my first official road race. For the uninitiated, Wells has gone on for a long time, history, blah blah blah, you don't care. The real question is, can you make a race report about a race where you ride in a circle (there's only one real corner, but its not that real since you can pedal through it) as exciting as a cross race report? <br /><br />Probably not. At least not Wells. Granted, the massive pile up that destroyed fellow CB teammate Erik Peterson's wheels and custom IF fork was exciting in that nauseating sort of way, its still not quite the epic battle that is every cross race.<br /><br />The B race went off pretty quick, and fell into a serious yo-yo rhythm. Someone knocked my front wheel and sent me careening into the other lane. I held it upright, with a one-leg-flailing-off-the-bike balancing act. I took about 20 minutes of breakaways, that were totally unnecessary for race strategy, but fun for testing my fitness. Training bloggery aside, I've hit the roads with some amount of regularity for the past 6 weeks. Some days its escapism, some days its therapy, other days it just is. <br /><br />I've yet to settle on season goals, mostly I want to see this through till cross season, and ultimately not get too caught up in the hype. I'm planning on being ready for Fitchburg, again for Green Mountain Stage Race, and ultimately strong for when it counts - cross season.<br /><br />I have some epics in mind. As I rolled over to see what the deal was I realized that Sarah was out of town - I was alone. Strange, I thought, that I could've sworn someone was there.<br /><br />I rolled back over, and just as my eyes closed the phone rang. Normally I don't keep my cell phone in the bedroom, but for some reason tonight I was compelled to. It was my Aunt Karen.<br /><br />"Jordan...Your Dad is Gone."<br /><br /><br />After a valiant two year fight with lung cancer, my father has passed away. I'm left now with the memory of his sheer strength, his kindness and the memories that shaped who I am. The crew insisted they get a shot of her even though she wasn't staying at the pet hotel. She's in at about 1:15.

We settled on the name Madison - Maddy for short - which means powerful in battle, and let me tell you, my little girl can rage! Its also one of my favorite, and arguably the most sketchy, event on the track. She did fairly well on the car ride home, only cried for a few minutes and then settled and slept. She was a little apprehensive to come in the apartment at first. I think the high ceilings and open space were a bit much for her. My lack of updates for the past month or so was mostly rooted in the fact that when I'm in Vermont I do what I want, which is mostly telemark apparently. <br /><br />So I spent the past 3 1/2 weeks making a valiant summit bid on the telemark skiing learning curve. Armed with a pair of black diamond Ethics, Rottefella Cobra R8's, and 3 buckle Scarpa T1's I put in at least 15 days quad busting glory at Sugarbush in Warren, VT. I learned a lot. For instance, anyone who sees you getting on the lift with tele gear instantly thinks you're badass and requests a condition update on the closest double black. Second, I never really appreciated releaseable bindings until my third or fourth 40-foot-slide-down-the-mountain-back-ski-cutting-up-the-inside-of-my-leg crash. And third, I am completely and utterly addicted to this sport. When you finally find that balance in your turns, it becomes a dance.<br /><br />Ok. So tele is great... But whats better? Yep. The second Rhode Island race (NBX cross) was an even better race than the day before. I managed to pull out a 5th place finish. No hole shot glory, but a good performance overall. One of the brilliant grounds crew was creeping slowly out of the driveway in his red truck-of-death so I was obliged to slow down through the apex of my turn and engage in the usual bike / idiot driver game of right-of-way-chicken. <br /><br />Out of nowhere enters one of my perennial favorites: Boston Dude Bro on a Mountain Bike. <br /><br />He let's out a jager-bomb fueled "ON YOUR LEFT, WATCH OUT!" as he cuts a sharp turn into the parking lot ... a sharp, <span style="font-weight:bold;">right</span> turn, on my right side. <br /><br />I calmly reply "Pretty sure that's my right."<br /><br />His alpha collar immediately pop's: "Why don't you signal where you're going, you dick"<br /><br />Amused, I respond: "Are you serious?"<br /><br />He continues his hair gel fueled fit: "I'm gonna slap the stupid off your face!"<br /><br />He proceeds to narrowly miss getting struck by a car, and mashes his pedals away.<br /><br />I offer this open note:<br /><br />Dudebro,<br /><br />Chill out, chief! I realize that you're in the zone, cruising along the sidewalk on 26" tires at 20 psi. Sure your back wheel washes out whenever you hit a puddle - its tough to be the man when you're riding your sister's purple Magna and swallowing your knees. 34x24 is a blistering gear ratio, and the wattage you were putting out surely could've lit an incandescent light bulb - or at least a few compact fluorescents.<br /><br />I know, its never easy when the world gets in your way when you're cruising to GNC for your muscle milk. Steadman Grand Prix of CrossThis weekend marked the end of my first season of cyclocross. For once, the weather bordered on Belgian, with an Alberta clipper rolling through and dropping some serious cold weather precipitation across New England. <br /><br />The prospect of two 630 am departures was enough to make me fork out the dough for some plush accommodations at the Best Western in West Greenwich, which, along with the Super 8 that occupies the same terribly named road, win the prize for being situated on New England's worst-named roadway - Nooseneck Hill Road. <br /><br />I digress. <br /><br />I arrived to cold weather and snow on the ground. I settled into my usual pre race panic routine of getting from parking lot to start line in 45 minutes. CB was on the ball (trolling the net) for the pre-registration, so Erik, Nick, and myself were able to line up in the front row. The usual pre race nervous chit chat gave way to the minute of silence, or rather, minute of Richard Fries babbling about some nonsense, before the whistle. I had a good jump, was clicked in, and began working the gears on the extremely long uphill paved start. The pace gradually increased as I worked around a few riders and settled into the front group. <br /><br />This idea of "racing" wore of rather quickly as most everyone decided that the big ring was off limits. So I was faced with a decision. Sitting there in the draft this was far too painless for a cross start. I drifted a bit out of the draft to test the wind. Yep, that has the potential to hurt. <br /><br /> So I went for it. <br /><br /><br /> I came around the left hand side of the group as another rider came around the right. He and I hit the hole neck and neck. I wasn't about to let some snot nosed cat 4 brat steal my glory. After all, this was the ultimate goal - the Verge Hole Shot. I made one move to cut the kid off on the first turn. <br /><br />There I was - leading the race. <br /><br />This oddity lasted about 2 minutes, long enough for me to assert some sort of dominance on the field, but not so long as to put any real gap on the field. <br /><br />Soon enough I fell to the back of the group of the top 4. I held the group for a while until a few guys, including CB teammate Erik, got past me, leaving me in 7th. On the last lap the sand pit decide to swallow my front wheel during my dismount, effectively pile driving me into the ground, and eliminating my hopes of reclaiming any places. <br /><br />The good news? Its best to schedule these training blocks before important events, and with the final Verge races around the corner it was high time I caught up on some serious T-cell work. The workout itself is fairly simple. The trick is to get a bit of a sore throat going - once you feel the burn put in some 2 x 2am nights, and finish with some jager sprints to really get everything moving. You know its working when the burn in the throat reaches the upper respiratory track. We're working towards the kind of cough that says "I'm a homeless man sketching you out on the bus." <br /><br /><span style="font-weight:bold;">MRC Cyclocross - Wrentham</span><br />Partially recovered, and feeling wholly unfit, I signed up for Sunday's race at Wrentham. Get good sleep? Eat well? Fuck that. What good would racing in 20 degree weather be with fresh legs. Can't feel anything at that temperature anyway. <br /><br />Thanks to <a href="http://untilthesnowends.blogspot.com">colin</a> and his work down in the nerdatorium, I was seeded fairly well based on my <a href="http://www.crossresults.com">crossresults.com points</a>. Do I get credit for all the referrals I just gave? So a 7th place seed, puts me on the second line of a 5 wide start.... ok. That's fine. 45 seconds to go. Someone asks "how much time do we have." The whistle blows. Cross is great.<br /><br />Slow start into a series of S-turns. One thing you learn in cross, is that you don't "keep a line," there's a competitive advantage to cutting off your opponent in a series of turns. However, the next time a cyfac kid almost wrecks me in two subsequent turns, the story is gonna be me putting him through the tape. So we roll on - and I'm feeling surprisingly good. The cold weather has left the mostly grass course incredibly bumpy, but I feel like I made a good tire pressure course, and for the first lap I stay closed onto the back end of the front group of six - first place is clearly within my view. <br /><br />As the second lap progresses, I become aware of a bit of a rattle. These things are hard to notice in these conditions, or at least to identify with any degree of certainty. But still, I was certain that I was rattling more on the course as time went by. I lost two spots in the second lap, but was still holding my own. A primordial ooze was excreting out of my face - a thick amalgam brought on by the cold temperatures. While I am no medical doctor, I'm certain that at least some part of that cold weather snot is liquefied brain, most likely the bit of sensibility that every cross racer must kill on a regular basis. Snot rockets were all the rage. <br /><br />But the rattling. It got worse. Soon I noticed that I was having to rotate my right heel quite a bit to disengage from my pedal. I soon realized my cleat was loosening. My release angle was about 100 degrees. Three dismounts per lap, three remounts, and I could feel my cleat sliding each time I ran. Pretty awesome. <br /><br />Not worth quitting for, not many things are, so I pressed on, fearing the inevitable endo (do people still say endo?) at each barrier. I held it together though, lost a few spots, and came in 10th. You know, the usual - slowest of the fastest group of the slowest racers. Upgrades are lame anyway - too much pressure.
